Wanted to share an update on August dry van spot prices from DAT Freight & Analytics that I’ve seasonally adjusted using the U.S. Census Bureau‘s X-13 software. Plot is for linehaul prices (excluding fuel surcharges). Thoughts:
•Seasonally adjusted prices in August were practically unchanged from July and remain down from the March – May highs.
•Given that general freight, long-haul, TL carriers have been able to add capacity over the last couple of months, the end of stimulus, and the downturn of motor vehicle output, I still feel comfortable predicting that we won’t see prices return to the May highs.
Question: at what point does the market start turning down in a meaningful manner? The market shifted very rapidly in the 2nd half of 2018. Are we looking at a 1st half of 2022 shift? time will tell.
